RIVER TRIP DESCRIPTION: Begin
your
trip by flying commercial Jet airliner or twin engine
commuter plane from Anchorage to the
southwestern fishing town of King Salmon. King Salmon is
the jumping off point for Brown Bear viewing, floating
and trekking trips into Katmai country. It is in bush
community hub of King
Salmon that your adventure awaits.
We load up your gear and board floatplanes docked on the
banks of the Naknek River. Shortly after take off, you
are flying across barren ground tundra and over giant
lakes en route to Kukaklek Lake. After about an hour's flight, a sea-size,
brilliant blue gem appears on the horizon. Buzzing in
low on landing approach, there are often wandering
Brown Bears all around the lakes shoreline, flocks of Sandhill
Crane and waterfowl in surrounding wetlands,
a few browsing Caribou feeding on tundra vegetation,
often a glimpse of a Red Fox, and
frenzied schools of spawning Sockeye Red Salmon swarming beneath the
fast moving shadows of
the airplane's floats. Soon thereafter you'll be setting
down on Kukaklek Lake, and pulling up to the beach.
While keeping a watchful eye on the Bears, you'll say a farewell for the duration of
your Float Trip adventure after a hasty unload with a few
last minute equipment checks
Kukaklek Lake's basin is mostly tundra covered with
dwarf-like vegetation and relatively few trees. The
surrounding landscape of Katmai's rugged volcanoes tower
on the horizon. It is from Kukaklek Lake that the Alagnak
River flows west-southwest 74 miles to its confluence
with the Kvichak River.
The Alagnak Wild and Scenic Waterway is a premier wilderness
river destination offering
diverse scenery, wildlife, fishing, and fun whitewater. The
river runs through sub arctic tundra, taiga, and
grasslands. It is typical to find Brown Bears fishing or
feeding on blueberries, a few nomadic Caribou roaming, and
Moose blending in motionless along the riverbanks. If you are
lucky to be in the right
places at the right times, other animals like fox, wolf,
river otter, beaver, eagles, ptarmigan, and waterfowl
will often
materialize throughout the trip. Fishing is outstanding
for nine species of sport fish including Northern Pike,
Lake
Trout, Rainbow Trout, Arctic Grayling, and seasonal runs
of Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Chum, Pink Salmon, and Dolly Varden
Char.
The Alagnak River is one of southwestern Alaska's most famous
sport fisheries and best Brown Bear viewing
opportunities. The river itself can be a little challenging,
yet not too demanding.
Slalom turning moves here and there to avoid closely spaced rocks
or boulder
gardens, a few deeper cuts through incised canyons, several
shorter duration rapids, a brief series of exciting whirlpools, and swimming bears
with just their heads sticking up are just some of the
wild features to expect that make
this river a great Alaska adventure float trip experience. |
